She only took up the game of golf at the age of 35 and was coached by her husband, Mr Dennis Comboy, the Professional at Delamere Forest GC from 1945 to 1989. She attained a scratch handicap within 2 years. She went on to win the County Championship 6 times, became Captain of England team for Home Internationals in 1975 and 1976; Captain of the Vagliano team in 1977 and 1979; Curtis Cup Captain in 1978 and 1979; President of ELGA from 1983 – 1985; President of LGU from 1992 – 1994, and was awarded the OBE for services to golf in 1995.

Delamere Forest took over the running of the Comboy Trophy in 2014, and it became known as the Delamere Comboy Scratch Trophy. It has been run as an Open 36 hole scratch competition and immediately attracted a National field. It became an Order of Merit competition for England Golf in 2015, and has attracted an elite entry of “plus to 5 handicap” golfers from a national field.

The Mary Hamer Salver was presented by Mary Hamer, a member of Delamere Forest Golf Club , to the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association in 1974, as the runner-up prize to the Comboy Scratch Trophy and passed to Delamere Forest in 2014.
